When we were thinking about what to call this adventure we did some brainstorming and came up with a few key words. These are the values, dreams and goals we have in mind for the next few years as we enter the empty-nesting stage of life.
Then we spent some time reading the Bible ’cause that’s just what we do! As we read, and as we listened to others talking about the important things in their lives, we realized that when we live the way God asks us to, we will have His peace and freedom no matter what circumstances come our way. These two verses really impacted us and have played a big part in shaping our mission.
When we do good works, it is our desire that they would draw others near to God and to glorify Him. So, Living Light means that our lives should shine like stars in the heavens and we can be a light to help people find their way in this dark world. (Daniel 12:3) We want to live our lives connected to Jesus as two oxen are yoked together to get the work done; only we’re kinda cheating because He does all the hard work and we’re like a little baby ox just hanging out beside Him and our biggest task is to just STAY there!! Hence, Living Light because when we walk with Him our burdens are light and He carries the load.
Lastly, Living Light means the obvious; to live a minimalist lifestyle and we’ve already experienced a great deal of freedom and simplicity in living with less. When we did our 4 week motorcycle vacation in 2016 I was surprised at how free I felt with very few personal belongings. I remember coming home, looking around my four bedroom house and wondering why on earth I thought I ‘needed’ all this stuff when I had just experienced one of the best months of my life living out of a saddlebag!
Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matt. 5:16)
Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. (Matt. 11:28-30)
